Me Singing HIGH

This is a voicemail recording I made while I was in college at around 21-22 years old. Its me singing the words "please leave a message" with "message" being an unexpected high note. Then I say "We'll call you right back." Thanks to Brian S for sending me this audio.

Business Cards

I ordered new business cards Monday night after months of procrastination. The design above is one half of the front of the card. The other half lists all the info my brother told me belongs on a professional business card. Having a logo at all on the card (above) was his idea; my first card design was plain black text on a white background. The back of the card has the same design as above (half deer logo, half info), but in different colors, next to a listing of my services (creative consulting, blah blah) and my products (the events and blogs I own). Can't wait to use them!

Shhh

My nights during the past few days have been quiet, serene, peaceful and completely unexpected. After a home-cooked frozen meal, I sit on my bed at home in the coziness of a central heating system enjoying the company of my cat, typing on my laptop and just... being... quiet. I'm not thrill-seeking, trying to be everywhere or putting on events.

I've gotten back a semblance of a routine thanks to my newly acquired low-wage hourly day job. I thought after doing 18 months of small to medium arts events all around town that I might end up in some creative job, but I didn't. So I went out and got the day job and my nights have been the calmest I've had in 1.5 years. Thank you!

Obesity Reason Enough For Cleavage Oasis

Was anyone downtown Saturday night after the football game? I was. Oh my so many wonderful ill-fitting, bra-less, purple, leopard, lame, gold outfits. Chances are, if you were on the heavy side and female, you were letting it all hang out. M'ams who wore bathing suits bottoms as shorts, I thank you, too. What a night to NOT have my camera! Drat.

Yawning Moomers

After Moomers ate breakfast, she came into the living room with me and laid down on the carpet right where the sun was streaming in through the front window. She rolled and stretched and got comfy, then let out this huge yawn I got on camera. Love it!

Ten Dollar Pad of Flyers

I made pads of flyers for the July and August Mobile Art Shows. I like how they turned out. I am pleased. But when I picked them up, I learned that each pad cost me TEN DOLLARS. Ridiculous. I need to do the math BEFORE I make the order. I would never have spent this much money on flyers for this. Lesson learned.

Mouth shut, eyes open, learning, learning, learning

So much to say and a blog is not the place to say it. Wish I could share, but I can't. When I have solid news, i will share. For now, its a mystery.

June is Busting Out All Over

Less than one week till Mobile Art Show #10. Didn't get accepted into Del Close Marathon. Orlando Improv Festival feels on-track. Couple job propositions on horizon. Last few SAK shows have been great fun. Cat is happy. That is all.

Much

Friday I get two voicemails:
1. Job offer, Winter Park Playhouse
2. In-person interview request, Disney Cruise Line
I was so overwhelmed by the good news I didn't return either call till this week.

Monday I attended the "Finding Nemo" vocalist audition. They gave me a callback! Tuesday I attended the callback. They gave me *another* callback. Wednesday I attended that callback. They gave me *another* callback for 40 minutes later. I attended that callback, which was a movement audition. They said we'll hear something from them if they want us in 2 weeks.

Monday I also attended the non-equity production of [Title of Show] audition. They gave me a callback. Its this Sunday.

The Winter Park Playhouse gig isnt until January 2011. The [Title of Show] gig is this October. Funny how the two gigs are auditioning now for productions so far away. Makes life interesting.

A friend helped me for *an hour* with my non-acting resume. She helped me format it, choose correct wording and told me stuff to add and leave off. Very helpful. I sat down within an hour of our meet up and knocked out a brand new version. Looks more professional.

I emailed some contacts asking them to make some art pieces for Audience Choice Awards. I've got 16. I need 11 more. I think I can get it done!

Let Others Do It For You

I'm watching an episode of 30 Rock after a long day of wasting my life (once again), and it occurs to me: why should I even *want* to be a performer when there are so many out there who are so much better? True, I figured this out in 2003 in NYC during a Upright Citizens Brigade class, but now that I'll old as Christ, its easier to sell to actor friends when I see them in audition hallways. Also, letting others be funny *for* you is so much easier! Its a win win!

Poster

A friend asked me to be in a photo shoot for her yesterday. She had a trained professional make up artist doing my face. The shoot lasted about 3 hours. The photos will be used in a project for Broadway Across America Orlando.

Catch Up

The Florida Film Festival has a Tennessee Williams-themed party coming up and it made me wonder about the author. I know nothing about him, but judging from "Wounded Genius," the A&E Biography on him, he was a creative and an alcoholic. I'd seen Suddenly Last Summer, but not Summer and Smoke. I'm almost through the end after 2 days of stops and starts.

I'm doing this car company thing. Can't say much about it. Ask me in person.

Went to 1st and 2nd days of the Winter Park Art Festival. So many thoughts about what people like, crowds, bringing smaller events into the fold, producing. Also spent several hours at the Outsider Art Fair.

The improv festival seems to be going well, but I want to check in with some people and get some feedback. Workshop, website, funding, contracts...

Moomers sits on my shoulders

So I am working on my laptop and Moomers comes up on my bed. I pick her up and place her on my shoulders, thinking she'd freak out. Nope. She lays down and goes to sleep. I love Moomers!

Meh Moh Mah Mih

Friday was the "Sonnet a Thon" held at Plaza Cinema Cafe. 154 people read one sonnet each from Shakespeare's collection of sonnets. There were a slew of impressive arts people involved, all reading. I was in good company. My sonnet was about a bad actor. So, I held a chocolate covered strawberry and te it while I rambled through the text. Then I said "You're welcome" and walked off stage.

Saturday I walked to the Folk Art Festival at Mennello Museum. The art inside the museum is hideous on first inspection, but very well lit. That had nothing to do with the festival outside, which was lovely. Little white tents dotted the grassy slope between the museum and a large lake. Bands played on a large covered stage while sales people sold $5 hamburgers and $2 coffees.

Sunday I am going to Disney World with my Mom and some portion of my family. We're meeting up at 12pm, then I have to leave by 5pm to have enough time to get home and prep for an 8pm SAK show.

Voci Posters!

Last week I designed, printed and hung the posters for a new client, Voci Dance. I got this fantastic illustrator, Dawn Schreiner, to do that lovely illustration for me. I sent her a sketch of four model-type ladies playing on their ipods/iphones. She turned it into this amazing painting that I then slapped text on and printed.

January 18, 2010

I did not get signed by an Orlando agent after a meeting with them, turned down the chance to be one of the ten bachelors in a charity Valentines Online bidding thing, sent out all the press releases (mostly one by one) for a client, remembered the banks were closed after I'd gotten out of my car and walked to the front door of a bank, remembered the art show I'm doing on Thursday needs lighting and generally feel like all of these projects will come crashing down on my head in a big pool of failure. I hope not, and I'll do what I can to not let that happen, but the feeling is still there.
